Texas Sage

November 5, 2016

QuestionWill my Texas sage, approx. 4 ft. tall, survive a NW AR winter outside?

AnswerTexas sage is not a salvia like most "sage" plants but Leucophyllum frutescens a member of the figwort family. It is not considered hardy in NW Arkansas but a lot can be determined by where it is planted and what type of winter we have.  If you have it in a protected spot on the east or north side of your house, give it a try.  Mulch it after a hard freeze and see what happens next spring.  I have had some gardeners who have had it killed back, but it still bounced back from the root system
