Pecan growers tour to visit Arkansas, Oklahoma operations

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas pecan growers and enthusiasts are invited to participate in the inaugural Tri-County Pecan Growers Educational Tour, Sept. 24-25.
The tour will include stops in both Arkansas and Oklahoma. The tour bus will depart from Little Rock, with an additional pickup location in Atkins, Arkansas.
Planned stops along the tour include Paw Paw’s Pecans in Atkins, Miller Pecan Company in Afton, Oklahoma, Hoffman’s Pecan Farm in Stillwater, Oklahoma and the Oklahoma State University Research Station in Perkins, Oklahoma.
Sherri Sanders, White County agriculture extension agent for the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, said the goal of the tour is to provide Arkansas growers with an educational experience that combines research, commercial production and peer-to-peer learning.
“The pecan bus tour is designed to give Arkansas growers an opportunity to see successful pecan operations firsthand and learn directly from fellow producers, researchers and industry professionals,” Sanders said. “Throughout the tour, participants will visit commercial orchards, research facilities and processing operations while gaining practical ideas they can take home and apply to their own orchards.
“One of the greatest values of a trip like this is the opportunity to ask questions, compare management practices and build relationships with growers who face many of the same challenges we do here in Arkansas,” she said.
There are 50 spots available for the educational tour. The cost to participate is $100, which covers the cost of a chartered bus and two meals. The cost does not cover lodging. Lodging details and a final itinerary will be provided to registered participants. Complete the registration form online to reserve your spot. The registration and payment deadline is Sept. 19.
