FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Before a new fruit variety ever reaches the field or a kitchen table, years of research and collaboration shape its future. Isabella Vaughn is taking it a step further by learning how to lead that work.
Vaughn, a doctoral student in the department of horticulture at the University of Arkansas, will be honing her skills as a research leader as a new member of the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research Fellows Program.
The nationally competitive, three-year professional-development program is managed by North Carolina State University in partnership with the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research and supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“Through the FFAR Fellows program, I hope to strengthen my leadership and communication skills needed to guide collaborative research teams and translate breeding discoveries into cultivars that strengthen agricultural systems and deliver high-quality horticultural crops people enjoy,” Vaughn said.
Vaughn joins 27 other emerging agricultural leaders from across the nation who will participate in training that is focused on leadership development, mentorship, communication and cross-sector collaboration. Hortifrut, a vertically integrated global berry platform which encompasses genetics, production, logistics and marketing, serves as Vaughn’s industry sponsor for the FFAR Fellows Program.
“This commitment reflects both Hortifrut Genetics’ investment in the FFAR Fellows Program and our confidence in Isabella as an emerging leader in molecular and applied plant breeding,” said Hortifrut Genetics Global Rubus Breeding and Development Director Ellen Thompson. “We see strong potential for Isabella to serve as an effective bridge between academic research and industry application.”
Margaret Worthington, director of the Fruit Breeding Program for the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, the research arm of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, said Thompson’s experience in commercial berry breeding provides Vaughn with insights into how research discoveries are translated into new varieties for growers and consumers.
Worthington is also an associate professor of fruit genetics in the department of horticulture for the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas.
“I have worked with Isabella since her undergraduate years, and have watched her grow into a confident, highly effective scientist and communicator who is well prepared to contribute to and benefit from a cohort-based professional development program,” Worthington said. “She combines exceptional scientific ability with strong leadership skills and a genuine commitment to mentoring others.”
Building the future of fruit breeding
Vaughn’s research focuses on applying genomics-assisted breeding approaches to improve fruit crops, particularly grapes and blackberries.
As a graduate student, Vaughn has already contributed to practical research for specialty crop breeding programs. In a recent study with Worthington, Vaughn was first author on research validating genetic markers that can help breeders predict seedlessness and flower sex in muscadines and other grapes before vines bear fruit. The research provides breeders with tools that allow them to make selection decisions earlier in the breeding process, potentially reducing the time required to develop improved cultivars.
Her research portfolio also includes significant contributions to blackberry genetics. Vaughn was also a co-author on research with Worthington and Thompson that identified a major genetic region controlling primocane fruiting. The discovery advanced understanding of the trait and provided breeders with new opportunities to accelerate the development of cultivars that produce fruit on first-year canes.
Vaughn has already helped develop future agricultural leaders by mentoring undergraduate researchers and serving as an adult leader for a Junior Master Gardener 4-H Club since 2022. She previously served as secretary of the Collegiate 4-H chapter at the University of Arkansas.
Other national recognition for Vaughn has come through the American Society for Horticultural Science, where she was named the Outstanding Master of Science Student and won the society’s Southern Region Norman F. Childers Graduate Student Oral Competition.
Vaughn ultimately hopes to build a career in the private sector, developing and leading fruit breeding programs that produce improved cultivars for growers and consumers.
Worthington said the fellowship program will help accelerate that path for Vaughn by expanding her leadership training, strengthening her professional network and increasing her ability to translate scientific discoveries into practical agricultural innovations.
