The objective of this series is to educate and train existing Arkansas veterinarians
to provide more food animal services in their practices. To accomplish this, the
University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service is offering monthly short courses that
will provide continuing education for Arkansas veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
All courses will be approved by the Arkansas Veterinary Medical Examining Board.
Infectious Disease in Food Animals
This short course will cover infectious diseases that impact Arkansas food animals,
how to diagnose and treat infectious disease, how to manage outbreaks and how to properly
launch an investigation for a suspected foreign animal disease. Instructors will include
veterinarians from the Arkansas State Veterinarian's Office and USDA APHIS.

8th Annual Symposium: Current Issues and Advances in Food Animal Wellbeing
This symposium will cover a range of topics including antibiotic stewardship, food
health and animal welfare, labor issues linked to animal welfare concerns, how the
Beef Quality Assurance Program affects cattle wellbeing and the future of food animal
industry assessments. Along with the seminars, veterinarians will be able to network
with area food animal producers and food animal industry leaders.

Back to Basics: Small Ruminant Medicine
This one-day course will cover nutrition, parasite control, reproduction and common
diseases and treatments. Hands-on training in the afternoon will include hoof trimming,
examination, venipuncture and pregnancy ultrasound. Veterinarians will be given a
formulary for the most commonly prescribed extra-label medications.

Intro to Embryo Transfer
This short course will be a combination of classwork and hands-on application. In
the morning, participants will receive a review of reproductive physiology, the theory
behind embryo transfer and how to diagnose pregnancy accurately. In the afternoon,
participants will work directly with cattle to practice procedures involving ultrasound
and artificial insemination.
