Aug. 8 Pine Tree Field day has comprehensive soy, rice tours

PINE TREE, Ark. – Soybean seeding rates, effects of urea application on soy protein concentration and how drones are used in multiple inlet irrigation in rice are among the topics included in the tours set for the Aug. 8 field day at the Pine Tree Research Station.
“We are offering two very comprehensive tours, one each for soybean and rice,” said Shawn Clark, director of the Pine Tree Research Station for the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station. “We will be showcasing everything from new and improved soybean lines, fertility management as well as the latest in weed and insect management.”
The station is located at 7337 Arkansas Highway 306 in Colt. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m., with the first tour departing from the station office at 8:20 a.m. For additional info, contact the station at (870) 633-5767.
This year’s agenda:
- 8:30 a.m. – Seeding Rates, Seed Treatments, Foliar Feeds, and Nitrogen Fertility in Soybeans – Jeremy Ross, extension soybean agronomist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.
- 8:45 a.m. – Evaluating Inoculation vs. Urea Application at Early and Late Planting Dates on Protein Concentration and Yield in Soybeans – Larry Purcell, professor, soybean physiologist, Division of Agriculture.
- 9:05 a.m. – Breeding New and Improved Soybean Cultivars – Leandro Mozzoni, assistant professor, soybean breeder, Division of Agriculture.
- 9:25 a.m. – Weed Control Options in Rice and Soybean – Jason Norsworthy, professor, weed scientist, Division of Agriculture.
- 9:40 a.m. – Cover Crop Management – Trent Roberts, associate professor – soil fertility, Division of Agriculture.
- 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. – Break
- 10:15 a.m. – Rice tour departs from office
- 10:25 a.m. – Rice Breeding Updates including New Releases of Clearfield Rice, Potential Long and Medium Grain Releases and Promising Experimental Pure Lines and Hybrids – Xueyan Sha, professor – rice breeding.
- 10:45 a.m. – Insect Update and Insect Control in Rice. – Gus Lorenz, Nick Bateman, extension entomologists.
- 11:10 a.m. – Irrigation Management: Flood vs. Furrow Irrigated Rice – Jarrod Hardke, extension rice agronomist.
- 11:25 a.m. – Utilizing Drones in Multiple Inlet Rice Irrigation and Using Moisture Sensors for Irrigation Scheduling – Mike Hamilton, extension irrigation instructor.
- Noon – Update from Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station administration - Nathan Slaton, assistant director-AAES.
- 12:10 p.m. – Lunch.
