Arkansas Pecan Growers Association hosts annual education meeting May 4 in Lonoke

LITTLE ROCK – Pecan scab, pruning and marketing are all on the agenda for the Arkansas Pecan Growers Association’s annual education meeting on May 4 in Lonoke.

Arkansas Pecans

“We’re pleased to have Charlie Graham, senior pecan specialist from the Noble Foundation, join us,” said Jackie Lee, extension horticulture-integrated pest management specialist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. For more than two decades “Graham conducted research in a variety of crops including watermelons, mayhaw, pawpaws and pecans. He brings depth of experience which will benefit our growers.”

Noble Research Institute, LLC, based in Ardmore, Oklahoma, is an independent nonprofit agricultural research organization dedicated to delivering solutions to great agricultural challenges

The meeting will be held at Grateful Acres Orchard, 2677 Bevis Road, Lonoke. Cost to attend is $20 for Arkansas Pecan Growers Association members or $30 for non-members. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration. The classroom portion of the program is in the morning. Participants must register in advance and the deadline to register is April 27.   • 8:30-9 a.m. -  Registration
  • 9-9:30 a.m. - DriftWatch overview, Vic Ford, interim extension associate director of Agriculture and Natural Resources for the U of A System Division of Agriculture.
  • 9:30-9:45 a.m. – Arkansas pecan scab hour map, Jackie Lee, Division of Agriculture.
  • 10 -10:15 a.m.- Break
  • 10:15-11:15 a.m. – Noble Foundation programs and pruning, Charlie Graham, Noble Foundation.
  • 11:15-12:15- Effective marketing begins with good research, Scott Nadler, University of Central Arkansas.
  • 12:15-1:00- Lunch
  • 1:00-1:45pm Bevis Pecan Orchard (participants must provide own transportation).
  • 1:45-2:45pm Rusher Orchard (participants must provide own transportation).
