Lawrence County fact sheet coverVoters in Lawrence County are deciding whether to increase the county's road millage rate in the upcoming November election.

The Public Policy Center at the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture partnered with the Lawrence County Extension Office to produce a fact sheet explaining the road millage election.

The proposal on the ballot asks voters for permission to do the following:

  • Increase the county millage rate for roads from 2% to 3%.

What is a mill?

A millage is a tax rate the county applies to the assessed value of a property — including real, personal and utility or agricultural property — to determine the dollar amount you owe on your tax bill. In Arkansas, assessed value of property is determined by the county assessor.

Counties assess property at 20% of its appraised, or market, value. One mill equals a tax of $1 per $1,000 of assessed value. Using a $100,000 home for example, the county would assess the property at $20,000, or 20%. One mill in this situation would result in $20 in taxes owed for that year.
