New herbicide trial to be showcased at southern Pea Field Day

ALMA, Ark.-- The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Vegetable Research Station will open up its doors to the public Aug. 14 to showcase the latest research in the southern pea breeding program.
Attendees will hear from two Division scientists, as well as get to see the research first hand with a field tour of the facility.
Ainong Shi, University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture vegetable breeder, will discuss the southern pea breeding program and the latest breeding lines that are available to the public. Nilda Burgos, professor from the crop, soil and environmental science department, will discuss a southern pea herbicide trial that is being conducted at the Vegetable Research Station. The trial includes a combination of five different herbicides sprayed on six different Southern Pea varieties: two blackeyes, two pinkeyes, a cream and a red Holstein.
“As always when there has been several years of research on a southern pea line and it is released, it is exciting to display it in hopes that it will be chosen by a canning, freezing, wildlife or a seed company for production,” said Stephen Eaton, Vegetable Research Station director.
The southern pea breeding program began in the early 1950s and has since released many improved pea varieties.
Registration for Southern Pea Field Day begins at 8:30 a.m. Registration is free, but pre-registration is encouraged by Aug. 6.
Plot tours begin at 10:20 a.m., followed by a complimentary lunch. The Vegetable Research Stations is located at 3810 Thornhill Street in Alma, Arkansas.
