Soil fertility clinic set for Feb. 15 at Arkansas State University

LITTLE ROCK – Cover crops, soil amendments and the effect of soil sample timing on nutrient concentration are among the topics on the agenda for the 2017 Soil Fertility Clinic, set for Feb. 15 at Arkansas State University.

The event at the Cooper Alumni Center begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. Registration is $50 and includes lunch. Continuing education credits will be offered at this event, said Leo Espinoza, extension soil scientist with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

“For farmers, crop consultants, county agents and anyone in the agriculture industry, this is a key learning event to more effectively manage soil and nutrients for optimum crop production,” Espinoza said.

The agenda:

  • 9 a.m. - How good are our potassium and phosphorus fertility recommendations for corn?
  • 9:45 a.m. - Review of some soil amendments and alternative fertilizer products: What the research shows.
  • 10:30 a.m. – Break
  • 10:45 a.m. - Are we losing nutrients from row crop fields? What data from the Discovery Farms program show.
  • 11:30 a.m. - Cover crops and residue management, update on current research
  • 12:15 p.m. – Lunch
  • 1 p.m. - Effect of soil sampling time on soil test results.
