Research field day will focus on corn, soybeans

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture field day July 21 in Desha County will focus on getting the most out of corn and soybean crops.
Larry Earnest, director of the Division of Agriculture’s Rohwer Research Station, said tour presentations will focus on soil fertility and pest management.
The field day begins with registration at 4 p.m., Earnest said. Two tours will begin at 5 p.m. Field day visitors can choose either a corn tour or a soybean tour. Each will last about an hour and a half, he said.
On the corn tour, division weed scientist Ryan Doherty will describe improved herbicide programs in grain sorghum. Extension plant pathologist Terry Spurlock will discuss disease identification and control methods.
Soil scientist Nathan Slaton will describe how to use micronutrients to attain optimum fertilizer performance in corn fields.
On the soybean tour, Spurlock will describe late-season fungicide use to manage diseases. Weed scientists Zach Hill will talk about new weed control technologies for soybeans.
Extension entomologist Nick Seiter will discuss insect identification and management in soybeans.
The field day will end with dinner following the tours. David Goodson, executive director of the Desha County Farm Services Agency, will deliver a keynote address updating participants on Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage program payments as authorized by the 2014 farm bill.
The Rohwer Research Station is 15 miles northeast of McGehee on Arkansas Hwy. 1. From Dumas, head south on U.S. Hwy. 65, turn east on Arkansas Hwy. 138, then north on Arkansas Hwy. 1 to the station’s entrance.
