AUGUSTA, Ark.  -- Rice plants, with their grain-laden heads and graceful curves, offer many design possibilities for creative minds and are the anchor for the second annual Rice Tabletop Centerpiece Contest, part of the 2015 Arkansas Rice Expo.

JUDGED - Judges look over entries in the inaugural Rice Expo rice centerpiece contest in 2014.

“When people think of rice, they generally think of food and farming,” said Richard Klerk, Woodruff County extension staff chair for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “We believe rice has a unique beauty that can be shown off on the tabletop apart from cooking.”

The contest is open to all, including Master Gardeners, Garden club members. Pre-event registration is required and the deadline is July 31. The competition is limited to 70 entries.

Prizes awarded for top three places along with a People’s Choice winner. Prizes may include a new rice cooker, an hour landscape consultation with Janet Carson, signed copies of Janet’s “In the Garden” book, and rice gift packages. Awards will be presented at the Rice Expo on Aug. 7.

Entry forms and complete contest rules may be downloaded from http://www.uaex.uada.edu/rice-expo/  or by contacting your county extension office.
