Rice, milo, soybeans on agenda for July 30 Crops Field Day at Rohwer

MONTICELLO, Ark. -- Chloride issues in soybeans, sugarcane aphids in sorghum and disease control in rice are among the topics for the July 30 Crops Field Day at Rohwer. 

Arkansas County Farm Service Agency Executive Director Danny Hoots will also provide a Farm Bill update. 

The event opens with registration at 4 p.m., with field tours beginning at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served following the tours. RSVPs aren’t necessary. “The field day is a chance for our clientele to hear what is working for us as we solve some of the latest problems in crop production,” said Kelly Bryant, director of the Southeast Research and Extension Center.  “We wanted to be sure to cover those topics that we feel are most pressing, and those we have good answers for.” 

Attendees are asked to choose one field tour. The choices are: 

Rice

  • N-STaR and Greenseeker Trent Roberts, assistant professor, University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.
  • Provisia Technology and New Herbicide Update - Jason Norsworthy, professor, University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.
  • Rice Disease Management - Yeshi Wamishe, assistant professor, extension plant pathologist, Division of Agriculture.
  • Volunteer Rice Management Options and Provisia Technology on Echinochloa and Weedy Rice - Nilda Burgos, professor-Division of Agriculture; Chris Rouse, U of A graduate assistant. 

Sorghum

  • Inzen Sorghum and Weed Control - Tom Barber, associate professor/extension weed scientist for the Division of Agriculture
  • Sugarcane Aphid - Nick Seiter, assistant professor/extension entomologist for the Division of Agriculture.
  • Foliar Disease Management - Terry Spurlock, assistant professor/extension plant pathologist for the Division of Agriculture.
  • Management for High Yields - Jason Kelley, extension agronomist-wheat and feed grains 

Soybeans

  • Spatial Dynamics and Interactions of Plant Diseases - Spurlock
  • Soybean Resistance to Cercospora and Frogeye - John Rupe, professor, Division of Agriculture
  • Weed Control Update - Spencer McCown, U of A graduate assistant, Ryan Doherty, weed science program associate, Southeast Research and Extension Center.
  • Chloride Injury to Soybean - Nathan Slaton, Professor-Soil Testing, Division of Agriculture.
  • Irrigation Management - Paul Francis, Professor-University of Arkansas-Monticello.
