LITTLE ROCK -- Everyone has heard about some fortunate companies that managed to land government contracts, but most don't have a clue about how to jump into that lucrative market.

A seminar on “The Insider's Guide to Winning Government Contracts” will be held Wednesday, June 18, at the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service headquarters located at 2301 South University Ave., Little Rock.

The speaker, Richard Porterfield, is the founder and owner of Porterfield Consulting Solutions LLC, based in Johnston, South Carolina. He has more than 30 years of experience as a government contracting specialist for both private industry and the United States government. He is also the author of “The Insider's Guide to Winning Government Contracts.”

Porterfield's book uses first-hand, expert advice of all the regulations, laws, and requirements that businesses need in order to effectively market their company's products by using plain English rather than governmental jargon.

What can be learned from the seminar?

Seminar attendees can learn how to define the market, identify opportunities, sell their products or services, and prepare and submit proposals and understand the government buying cycle.

In addition, subjects will include: how to differentiate themselves from the competition, doing business with large prime contractors and getting paid. Detailed descriptions of the types of solicitations and certifications used by the government will also be discussed at the seminar.

First-time event

Arkansas Procurement Assistant Center, known as APAC, is sponsoring this event, bringing the speaker to Little Rock because “this is what contractors really want to know about winning government contracts,” said Ray Blevins, Arkansas Procurement Assistance Center director.

APAC's sponsorship means there is no charge to attend. The seminar runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is the first time this event is being held in Arkansas, Blevins said.

This seminar is a valuable tool for businesses working in, or wanting to participate in government contracting, he said.
