Selecting replacement heifers, cost management top agenda at Little Red River Beef Cattle conference

HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. – Replacement heifer selection, herd health, deworming update and cost management are on the agenda for the 2014 Little Red River Beef Cattle Conference on April 10 at the Cleburne County Livestock Auction in Heber Springs.
“With normal rainfall returning to Arkansas in 2013, many cattle producers are looking to return their cattle operations to production levels prior to the 2012 drought,” said Tom Troxel, associate head-Animal Science, for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “Producers are asking the questions on how to best do that. The 2014 Little Red River Beef Cattle Conference will offer ideas to best address many of their questions and concerns.”
Among the questions the conference will help answer:
For example which heifers should I select to rebuild the cow herd?
Which heifer based upon appearance, correct feet and legs, correct body type, etc. will make a good replacement female?
Herd health and an update on the newest deworming products will also be presented.
“Even though cattle prices are at historic highs, managing cow costs is just as important now as ever before,” Troxel said. “Every cattle producer should know what it costs to maintain a cow.”
Managing cow cost will be the third presentation.
The Little Red River Beef Cattle Conference is a joint educational effort by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, Ag Heritage Farm Credit Services and Farm Credit of Western Arkansas.
The conference speakers are:
Mr. Bryan Kutz, instructor – Animal Science – “Replacement Heifer Selection.”
Dr. Jeremy Powell, professor and veterinarian – Animal Science – “Herd Health and Deworming Update.”
Dr. Tom Troxel, Professor and Associate Department Head – Animal Science, “Are You a Cow Manager or a Cost Manager?”
A registration fee of $20 will be collected at the door. The conference is from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
