Fruit growers from four states gather for pruning Clarksville workshop

“We had attendees from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and even one who flew in from North Carolina,” said Dan Chapman, director of the Fruit Research Station. “All fruit trees, vines and bushes need to be pruned annually, and now is the time to do it while they are dormant.”
The Feb. 20 workshop allowed participants to rotate through six stations, each specializing in a specific fruit: Chapman on peaches, Extension Fruit Specialist Elena Garcia on apples; Johnson County Extension Staff Chair Blair Griffin demonstrating on blueberries; David Gilmore, and Kay Buck, research technologist and research field technician both showing techniques for muscadines/grapes and Extension Program Associate Tauyna Ernst, who was demonstrating on blackberries.
The station will hosting three more events this year:
- March 27 -- Organic strawberry workshop
- June 12 -- Blackberry production field day
- Sept. 12 -- Muscadine field day.
