Pecan producers can sharpen their skills at April 24 workshop

ATKINS, Ark. – Producers can sharpen their skills at the April 24 Pecan Growing and Grafting Workshop: Years 1-5.

The workshop, which runs 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. will be held at the Point Remove Wetlands Reclamation and Irrigation District Office at 65 McLaren Loop in Atkins. Lunch will be served and attendees are asked to RSVP by April 18 to ensure enough materials and lunch. “The workshop is for both commercial and home owners interested in growing their knowledge,” said Phil Sims, Pope County extension staff chair. Dan Chapman, director of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Fruit Research Station and Miller County Extension Agent John Turner, the Cooperative Extension Service’s ‘Mr. Pecan,’ will be talking about the best way to keep this American native nut tree healthy and productive.”

The workshop will cover planting, grafting, fertility, insects and diseases. Graft wood will be available for $1 per stick. Grafting demonstrations will be conducted in the field at an adjacent pecan orchard, so participants should dress accordingly.
