4H Day Camp

Ashdown, Ark. –

We have had tons of fun in July learning about 4-H at our 4-H Day Camps! We had three day camp sessions in Ashdown and one session in Foreman. Angie Lewis, 4-H Program Assistant and I hosted these sessions to give more kids exposure to what 4-H has to offer them. The craft for the day camp was building binoculars to use later in the camp for the bear hunt activity. The kids used markers, glue sticks, streamer paper and their imagination to design their own binoculars. At the day camp the kids got to have a cooking lesson where they made dirt pudding cups with 1% milk (see recipe below).

There were several team building activities throughout the camps. The first activity was always an ice breaker game to get everyone involved.  The next few activities focused on teamwork and problem solving. One of the activities is called the “worm-hole.” The team had to get every member through the “worm-hole” without touching the rope. We also had the kids sit in a circle to try to pass the beach ball using only their feet without letting the ball touch the ground. This activity took concentration and team work, but also involved a lot of laughter! They were surprised how hard it was to pass the ball. One child even noted that this is what your world would be like if you did not have arms.  Children are always thinking and learning new things through each activity.

Finally, each group got to go on a bear hunt. We would describe an animal to the group and they would use their binoculars to find the appropriate set of animal tracks to match the description.  We really worked on our listening skills with this game. Kids were surprised to see the tracks that a snapping turtle or wild turkey or black bear make in the woods.

The 4-H Program in Little River County has many different programs to offer for kids to make learning fun.  Each 4-H club needs a few adult volunteers to assist with the group. If you are an adult who is interested in helping kids learn while having fun, call Angie Lewis at 870-898-7224 to get signed up today.  Kids age 5-19 can be involved in the many activities that 4-H has to offer.  There are 4-H programs on engineering and science, health, food and nutrition, livestock, public speaking, photography, shooting sports and a lot more. Each year Little River County has a county o’rama competition in the spring and then there are also district and state o’rama competitions through the summer.
